Abstract
Pretendemos con este artículo, por una parte, recordar algunos de los hitos más importantes en la historia de la dirección escolar en España, hacer algunas reflexiones y exponer algunas conclusiones sobre las enseñanzas aprendidas a lo largo del tiempo en relación con la dirección y el liderazgo de los centros educativos.
En un segundo lugar, exponemos algunas ideas para la reflexión sobre la dirección escolar en el siglo XXI y el liderazgo para la gestión de la mejora de las instituciones educativas. También nos atrevemos sugerir algunos saberes que debe conocer el liderazgo para la mejora.
Finalizamos con unas conclusiones sobre los aspectos más destacados de lo expuesto en los apartados anteriores.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this paper is firstly to highlight some of the most important landmarks in the history of school management in Spain, as well as to reflect upon and to draw some conclusions about the lessons learned over time in relation to school management and leadership.
Secondly, we propose some new ways of thinking about school management in the twenty-first century and about how senior staff can best manage the improvement process in schools. We also dare to suggest certain competences necessary for this function.
We end with some conclusions about the key discussion points from previous sections (papers).
