Information Systems in Education: Key Tools for Data-Driven Decision-Making

Abstract
Information systems are the main asset of companies and organizations today, as they contain all their information. Through them and the extensive collection of DSS (Decision Support Systems) tools, it is possible to understand the status of organizations, make decisions that allow them to evolve, and achieve their objectives more safely and accurately. Lacking the appropriate equipment and personnel dedicated to this task poses a risk that may be unacceptable given the stakes involved.
From professional experience using and developing information systems in conjunction with DSS tools, we conclude that only by having these technological environments can we assess the risks of decisions made and the opportunities lost when these technological products, which are currently essential for the proper functioning and governance of companies and organizations, are not available. In educational systems, Education Management Information Systems (EMIS) meet this technological need.
As an example of its application, we propose a reflection on the treatment of grade-level retention in the compulsory stage and the contribution that information systems could make to its treatment.
