EDUTEAMS: An Artificial Intelligence tool for forming diverse, complementary, and equitable teams in collaborative learning

Abstract
Teamwork is a key competence in 21st-century education, yet its development in schools faces persistent challenges: collaboration does not emerge automatically, and team formation based on random or intuitive criteria often results in inequalities and weak cohesion. This article presents an educational and technological experience centred on EDUTEAMS, a free platform developed by the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC) that applies artificial intelligence algorithms to form diverse, complementary, and equitable teams in educational contexts. It describes the design, operation, and initial validation of the tool through a descriptive innovation study conducted in Vocational Education and Training (VET) and higher education settings. The results show improvements in team cohesion, participation, and performance, as well as a reduction in teachers’ organisational workload. Overall, EDUTEAMS represents a pedagogical and technological innovation that promotes equity and effectiveness in collaborative learning.
